Relocating to Opelika?

An Alabama driver’s license must be obtained upon establishing residency.  If you have a valid out-of-state driver’s license and a social security card, you will need to take the vision and written tests only ($5.00)

 

New Resident Vehicle Registration – Lee County Revenue Commissioner’s Office – Lee County Courthouse, 737-3655, 215 S. 9th St., Opelika, AL 36801

Newcomers must register their vehicles within 30 days of entering the State of Alabama.  This involves transferring the vehicle title to Alabama and then registering the vehicle.  After transferring the title, the vehicle will be registered and ad valorem tax and tag fees will be calculated.

 

To register your vehicle, you will need a certificate of title, vehicle registration and a bill of sale.

 

Yearly Registration Renewal – Although reminders are mailed the first few days of each renewal month, it is still the responsibility of the vehicle owner to make sure the vehicle is registered and fees are paid on time.

 

Vehicle registration can be renewed by mail.  Mail the reminder along with a check or money order to the address shown on the reminder car.  The owner must sign the card and include their driver’s license number.

 

Tags – Vehicle tags are paid for and issued at the time you register your vehicle or renew your vehicle registration.

 

Automobile Insurance – Motorists are required to carry liability insurance on each motor vehicle.  Failure to show proof of coverage at traffic stops could result in a fine of up to $500.

The City has three full-service drop-off sites for recycling. These are located at Miles Thomas Field (Rocky Brook Road), Michael Covington Recreation Center (Carver Avenue) and Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant (Grand National Parkway).  There is a fourth drop-off site Parkway Shopping Center (2nd Avenue) but they are not full-service. Items accepted for recycling include: newspaper (no glossy paper), clear and colored glass, aluminum, steel cans, plastic jugs, and cardboard (broken down only).
