Opelika, AL- (December 29, 2005) - The Opelika Chamber of Commerce will kick off its 2006 Business over Breakfast series with guest speaker, Drayton Nabers, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, on Feb. 28, 2006 . The breakfast is sponsored by Hilton Garden Inn Auburn-Opelika. The member-only breakfast will take place at Saugahatchee Country Club at 7:30 am.
Nabers, who was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama in June 2004 by Gov. Bob Riley, announced in September that he would be seeking election for the seat he currently holds in the upcoming elections.
Nabers, who was born in Birmingham, holds an undergraduate degree from Princeton University (1962) and a law degree from Yale School of Law (1965). After graduating from Yale, Nabers served as a Law Clerk for U. S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black. He joined the Birmingham law firm of Cabaniss, Johnston, Gardner, Dumas & O'Neal in 1967 as an associate before becoming a partner in the firm in 1971. In 1979, Justice Nabers joined Birmingham-based Protective Life Corporation, where he worked for twenty-two years and served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. He retired from Protective in 2002 and was appointed Finance Director for the State of Alabama by Governor Riley. He served as Finance Director until his appointment to the Supreme Court.
Justice Nabers is a member of the Alabama Academy of Honor and has served as chairman of Leadership Birmingham, United Way of Central Alabama and Cornerstone Schools of Alabama. He also served as Director of the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army and is a member of the Alabama and American Bar Associations. Before accepting his appointment to the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Nabers served on the Board of Directors for Energen Corporation, Alabama National BanCorporation, and ProAssurance Corporation.
Business over Breakfast promotes community business and informs Opelika Chamber members of local and state activities. Reservations are preferred due to limited seating. The cost of the event is $16 per member in advance and $17 upon arrival if seating is available.
