OPELIKA, AL – (April 10, 2007) – The Opelika Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, Southern Union State Community College and local industry are teaming up to bring the 2007 Industry Career Day on April 12, 2007 to high school students enrolled in technical classes. The program was developed to promote industry in the area, as well as inform students and the community of the opportunities available to ensure a successful industry career. The mission of the Education Committee is to “Unite schools and industry in order to enhance the local community and business economy.”
During the 2007 Industry Career Day event more than 100 Opelika High School students will tour seven different laboratories at Southern Union's Opelika campus, including Automotive Collision Repair, Automotive Mechanics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Heating and Air Conditioning, Machine Shop, Industrial Electricity and Electronics and Welding. Industry participants will display a booth in the laboratory that most closely relates to their company.
The student will arrive in three rotations throughout the day-long event, with the first tour beginning at about 8:20 a.m. The tours coincide with the students' regular career tech class schedules to keep them from missing their other classes.
This is the event's third year and organizers expect it to be even better than before.
“We are once again pleased to team up with Southern Union State Community College on this important event,” said Wendi Routhier, President of the Opelika Chamber of Commerce. “These students are our future workforce and this program gives them a great introduction to the various educational and employment opportunities with industries in the Opelika area.”
