OPELIKA PREPARES FOR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARADE

OPELIKA, Ala. — More than 70 area groups and organizations will ring in the Christmas season as the community gathers for the annual Opelika Christmas Parade on Wednesday, November 30 at 4 p.m.

This year the parade committee wanted to honor and recognize all those who worked to assist in the Hurricane relief efforts and representatives of the Red Cross will serve as Grand Marshals of the parade festivities.

Opelika’s Annual Christmas Parade is rich in tradition, but this year’s festivities will have a new twist. This year’s parade will celebrate the theme “Christmas Songs.” In keeping with the theme, each float will be decorated to reflect a different holiday tune.

The parade route begins at the corner of Avenue C and 9 th Street, heading northwest up 9 th to South Railroad Avenue. After a right turn at S. Railroad, the parade will travel one block to 8 th Street and then right for two blocks to Avenue B. A left turn at Avenue B takes the parade over to 7 th Street, where it will turn left and continue two blocks before it disbands at the corner of 7 th Street and S. Railroad Avenue.

Immediately following the parade, spectators and parade participants will

assemble on South Railroad Avenue (between 8 th and 9 th Streets) for the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The Tree Lighting Ceremony will include an appearance by Santa Claus, announcement of float winners and will conclude with the lighting of the tree

While the Christmas Parade Committee suggests that people arrive early for best parking, there will be special parking for disabled persons available on South Railroad

Avenue (between 8 th and 9 th Streets). Special permits will be issued by the Opelika Chamber of Commerce for those needing special parking. Permits can be picked up directly at the Chamber office located at 601 Avenue A. For more information, please call the Chamber at 334-745-4861.
