| The Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is
Alabama’s newest and fastest growing MSA. Comprised
solely of Lee County, the Auburn-Opelika MSA’s population
grew by 32% from 1990 - 2000, which ranks 19th nationally
among all MSA’s. The MSA’s 2003 population is
estimated to be 122,883, according to projections by the Center
for Businesses and Economic Research at the University of
Alabama. The area’s continued population growth mirrors the
steady growth and development of nonagricultural employment.
On a comparison of December 2001 and December 2002, the Auburn-Opelika
MSA was one of only two MSAs in the state to experience job
gains, with the addition of 200 jobs. A similar comparison
between December 2000 and 2001 revealed a gain of 1,000 jobs
for the area. The growing manufacturing sector, including
automotive suppliers, expanding recreation with the new Lodge
and Conference Center at Grand National, and numerous new
and expanding retail developments all strengthened the area’s
economy and will continue to generate future opportunity for
business and industry. Be sure to check out our Links
